House, mid-C18, extended c. 1870, now public house and hotel. Brick, stucco, stone
quoins and dressings, hipped slate roof. Symmetrical main block of 5 bays and
3 storeys. Round-headed doorway with semicircular porch on 4 fluted columns with
Acanthus capitals. Rusticated quoins, string course and cornice. Windows have stone
sills and keystones, modern casements with glazing bars. 2 chimney stacks. The
extension to right is not included in the item. History: originally the home of
landowning Hornby family, the house was bought in 1871 by the Raikes Hall Park
Gardens and Aquarium Company, which developed its 51 acre site as the principal
tourist attraction of Blackpool before the Winter Gardens and Tower.
