Lodge to Hornby Castle (q.v.), with walls and gate piers, mid C19th.
Snecked sandstone rubble. Lodge has steep slate roof behind an embattled
parapet. 2 storeys. The windows have upper lights with Tudor-arched heads
and a drip course over each storey. A canted projection faces west towards
the road. On the ground floor its central window is mullioned and
transomed and of 6 lights. At each side is a 2-light window with transom.
The canted sides are blank on the 1st floor, which has a central cross
window. The doorway is in a 2-storey projecting porch on the right-hand
return wall. At the rear is a circular embattled turret. Chimney on centre
of ridge. The gate piers, to the right of the lodge, are of sandstone
ashlar. The central pair have weathered plinths of square plan, with the
upper part of the pier chamfered to an octagon in 2 stages. Each is
surmounted by a moulded cap with crenellation and a tapering top with iron
finial. On each of the main faces is a carved roundel, including figures
of a cat and a rat. The central pair of piers is flanked by a smaller
pair with similar, but less elaborate, detail. Concave walls, with a
string course and embattled parapet, link the lodge to its adjacent gate
pier, and flank the group to form the entrance to the drive.
