Grain barn. C16 extensively altered in late C18 or early C19 with some
subsequent alterations. Aisled timber framed barn of 8 bays, the exterior clad
in late C18 or early C19 brickwork in Sussex bond with some grey headers. Half-
hipped plain tiled roof. 2 former hipped cart entrances which have been glazed,
probably in the early C19. East side of south front has 16 pane sash with
moulded architrave. Plank door inserted in centre of this front. East front
has 2 inserted 1930s metal windows and 3 C20 garage entrances to ground floor.
West elevation is mainly clad in corrugated iron. North obscured by C20
buildings not of special interest. Interior has roof structure of square crown
posts. Originally each bay had 2 foot braces resting in the tie beam and 2 head
braces resting in the collar beam but some are missing. Secondary angled queen
strut post inserted late C18 or early C19 for strengthening. 2 bays have also
had an extra arched brace bolted on for strengthening and 3 bays have had bolted
knees inserted into the jowling of the upright posts. Upright posts are set in
concrete padstones. Top of wall plate has reused timbers. Aisle roofs are
late C18 or early C19. Through purlins with no ridge piece. East end bay has
been bricked up half way up but has long diagonal tension braces. Wall frame is
intact to top half of east end and is present except for large C20 vehicle
opening. West end inserted when the building was used for repairing vehicles.
