5/189 Barn immediately south of the
24.6.74 Plough Inn
GV II
Barn, in use as restaurant. Possibly early C18 although the Royal Commission
for Historical Monuments suggests a late C18/early C19 date (report and scale
drawing in the National Monumental Record). Framed construction on a brick
plinth, clad in weatherboarding; peg-tile roof.
Plan: East-facing. A 5-bay barn with a central entrance on the east side and
an east aisle. The north end bay is lofted. There is evidence that the 4th
aisle bay from the south was partitioned off from the rest of the barn on the
north and west sides, the partition has been removed.
Exterior: The central porch on the east side is flush with the east wall of
the aisle and-has a hipped roof. The original doors have been replaced with a
small doorway. Large C20 timber window on the left (south) return with
glazing bars, 4 C20 windows on the right (north) return. Roof half-hipped at
ends and carried down as an outshut over the aisle on the east side.
Interior: Tie-beam trusses with queen struts and diagonally-set staggered
butt purlins. Straight braces between the jowled wall posts and tie-beams.
The aisle roof is supported on horizontal timbers between the aisle post and
aisle roof purlins and timbers angled down from the aisle posts to the wall
plate of the aisle walls. The wall-framing is close-studded with straight
braces above the middle rail.
Group value with the Plough Inn.
Photographic record, report and scale drawings of the barn in 1974 are in the
National Monument Record.
