Portico of summer house. Early C18, for William Gore probably by
James Gibbs as part of landscaping scheme for Tring Park. Rear end
removed in later C20 for road widening. Painted stonework, stucco
backwall with flat dado rail, plastered ceiling with moulded cornice.
Roof sheeted. Temporary weatherboard rear gable. Tetrastyle open portico
formerly fronting a summer house at junction of 2 alleys in the wood,
facing SW. Roman Ionic order with angular capitals and triangular
pediment with modillions. Matching pilasters at rear wall have entasis.
Raised on 2 moulded stone steps and with scar of central door with
triangular pedimented doorcase. Gibbs designed ornamental buildings for
William Gore (d.1739) Soane MS (calvin(1978)343).
