Originally called Ripley Court. The home of the Iden family. It is claimed
that Jack Cade, the leader of Cade's Rebellion in 1450, was killed here when
resisting apprehension by Alexander Iden, Sheriff of Kent, who occupied the
house. However, the identity of the spot has been disputed and a similar claim
is made for Heathfield in Sussex, where a part of the Parish is called Cade
Street and a monument has been erected to commorate Cade's death. The house
is probably a C15 timber-framed hall-house, refaced with red brick on the ground
floor and tile-hung above. Hipped tiled roof with smoke louvres. One gabled
dormer. Four casement windows. Doorcase with flat hood over.
