Iron furnace for charcoal smelting. c.1737. Stone rubble. Square structure
has extensions to west built into slope of ground. Deeply splayed furnace
openings, that to east with iron lintels, that to south round-arched. Smaller
square top structure has round-headed opening to west with long thin voussoirs
and C20 inserted door, approached by C20 ramp. Rear extensions have half
relieving arches and flat arched window openings, small wing to south has one
remaining gable. Footings to demolished structures to south and east, wheel pit
to north. Best surviving charcoal fired furnace in South Lakes district.
