Lock and tailbridge. Between 1794 and 1798. William Jessop
engineer. Hammer-dressed stone. Double upper gates and
recesses to accommodate 2 sets of lower gates, none of which
now exist and only one of which was ever fitted. Tailbridge
to south. Winding gear remains. Lock walls reveal
stonemason's marks. The east retaining wall was repaired in
the C19. Segmental-arched bridge with stone band, round-
topped copings and square terminating piers. A wall sweeps
down to the pound level and incorporates boatman's steps.
