House. "IB 1605" (James Bamford) on door lintel.
Hammer-dressed stone with graduated stone slate roof. T-shaped
hearth-passage plan with a total of five bays and two storeys.
Quoins and projecting plinth. Door in bay two has heavily
chamfered surround with carved stops and a Tudor-arched
lintel. The house-part has a 3-(fire window) and 5-light
mullion and transom window both having been enlarged in C20,
bay one a 3-light mullion and bay five a 5-light mullion window.
3, 2, 2, 2, and 4-light mullion windows to first floor. All
windows are double-chamfered and have hoodmoulds, some
mullions are cavetto-moulded. Shaped eaves gutter brackets.
Left gable is coped with ball finial; whereas the cross wing
which was originally gabled is now hipped. Three diagonally set
chimney stacks with cornices, the one on the right return
projecting. 2 and 3-light windows to right return and 4-
light windows to left return (in each case one is a C20
copy). Similar heavily chamfered door surround to rear which
has a 2-light double-chamfered cavetto-moulded mullion
window. The rear of the cross wing has 3 and 4-light flat-
faced mullion windows of C18 date and a lean-to extension
against its gable. INTERIOR: Imposing stone fireplace in
house-part has elliptical head, cyma-moulded surround and
ogee-moulded cornice. The fireplace may replace a former
smoke hood. Hewn beams, chamfered and one forked. A fine
and well preserved example of an early C17 yeoman's house.
