Terrace of workers' cottages. AD 1873 on datestone. Built by
Atherton Colliery. Brick with slate roof. A long row of
cottages mostly of 1 bay and 2 storeys which is articulated
by gabled projections. A central 3-storey half-hipped
projection dominates the composition: it has 3 round arches
supported on short stone columns on the ground floor,
decorative brick banding, 2 pointed arch first floor windows
with hoodmoulds, and 3 pointed second floor openings (now
blocked) with the half gable above a decorative brick
frieze. The row extends by 12 bays to either side with
gabled projections at each end and mid-way. Each cottage has
a door with segmental brick arch and a 3-light casement
window on each floor below a similar arch. The end gabled
projections have a first floor band, a blind arch above the
first floor window and a decorative brick verge detail.
Ridge chimney stacks with recessed brick panels. Less
elaborate detailing to rear which has had many windows
reduced in height.
