Canal warehouse, grocers shop and house, now shop premises.
1804. Built for Thomas Walmsley a local industrialist when
the adjacent Rochdale Canal was opened. Flemish bond brick
with slate roof. L-shaped plan with a total of 4 storeys.
The street elevation is only 2 storeys high and has 5 bays.
It has a stone plinth, eaves cornice and the central 3 bays
are slightly advanced. Door in bay 2 with fanlight
architrave and archivolt with C20 shop window inserted on
the ground floor to its right. Loading doors in bay 5.
Window openings with stone sills and flat brick arches are
either blind or have C20 casements. The curved wharf-side
elevation has 8 bays and 4 storeys with partially blocked
loading doors in bay 3. One 16-pane sash window the others
being cross-casements. Left return has sash windows. Large
C20 lean-to extension to rear which retains some original
windows. Original floors and king-post roof trusses. D.
