Railway viaduct over River Irwell. 1848. For the Lancashire
and Yorkshire Railway. Rock-faced stone. Engineer probably J Hawkshaw.
Total of 18 arches. Curved on plan. Battered square piers support segmental
arches which spring from impost bands. The arch over the
river is considerably wider and is flanked by flat piers
which rise to parapet level. The coped parapet sits above a
continuous band. Square terminating piers.
