Grotto and Pool South-East
Of Coleorton Hall
GV II*
Grotto and associated pool. 1806, with mid C20 alterations. Designed by William Wordsworth, and built under his supervision, for Sir George Beaumont of Coleorton Hall. Shellwork in the grotto by Dorothy Wordsworth. The grotto incorporates brick and dressed stone, probably salvaged from builders' rubble on the site. Semicircular arched recess, formerly faced with tufa, with fragmentary remains of shellwork within. Pebbled floor in star pattern. To the right, stone steps down to a pebbled path flanking the pool. Circular pool, approx. 5m diameter, with plain edging. Central fountain in the form of a vase. The grotto is a major feature of the winter garden designed by Wordsworth, and is a significant element in the landscaping of Coleorton Hall.
