1834-6. Designed by William Fairbairn for Ralph Orrell. Main block and 2
wings. Top storey altered after recent fire. 6 storeys in brick with hipped
roofs. End pavilions have brick pilasters to quoins. 4 windows, stone flat
arch, and cornice Centre has 18 windows and hoist. Modern blocks in angles
and some modern additions. Front of courtyard has 1-storey range of 5 windows
and 3 blocked. Entrance block of 2 storeys with 3-1-3 round-arched windows.
Stone cornice and capping. 2 round-arched doorways (1 blocked) and segmental
carriage entry. Main block has internal structure of cast-iron pillars and
beams, brick arches. Main rooms 280 ft long by 50 ft wide. River elevation
of 5 storeys, with blocked openings to ground floor, 26 bays. Included for
historical interest.
