4/136 The Manor House
GV II
Manor house, Mid C17. Lias ashlar, plain tiled roof, 3-unit plan with cross
wing to left. 2-storeys with cellar and attic, 3-window range. 2- and 3-light
moulded stone mullions with wood casements. Partially blocked window in
ground floor of cross wing. Entrance between windows 2 and 3 from left has
fine moulded stone architrave and entablature with C20 door. String course
between ground and first floor and below eaves. Gabled roof with gabled cross
wing. All with ashlar gable parapets and kneelers. Worn tablet on cross wing.
Elevation of cross wing is 2 window range of casements having moulded stone
surrounds. Rear similar with 2-light stone mullions. Interior: Jacobean stair
with turned balusters and quarter landing, probably altered. Remnant of open
fire in kitchen. Reputedly built by J. Markham 1604.
