Terraced town house. 1730 with alterations of c.1792. Brown brick with
red brick dressings, channelled stucco ground floor, slate roof. 4
storeys (the top floor a c.1792 heightening) and basement. 3 windows
wide. Closet wing plan. Doorway to left, elliptical arched opening in
plain stucco surround, recessed panelled door and plain fanlight.
Recessed glazing bar sashes under flat gauged red brick arches.
Cornice-band finishing off ground floor stuccowork; parapet with coping.
1st floor geometric patterned cast iron balcony. Cast iron area railings
with urn finials. Interior retains most of its original features with
fielded panelling and cornices, pilastered archway from passage-hall to
stairwell which is also panelled with dog leg cut and carved string
staircase, changing to closed string for top flights, 3 turned balusters
per tread, columnar newels; carved wood chimneypieces with pilastered
jambs, etc. L.C.C. plaque commemorates the residence of
Benjamin Franklin as Agent to the General Assembly of Pennsylvania,
1757-72 and from 1770 to 1774 of William Hewson surgeon, physiologist and
friend of Franklin. Part of the Craven family's C,18 development of
their Brewhouse estate, laid out by Flitcroft. Graded I for historical
associations.
