(Artillery House)
G.V. II
Office block. 1928 by Maurice Webb. Steel frame faced in cream faience in
modernistic "Hollywood Egyptian" style. 7 storeys and attic. 7 bays wide
as 5 bays of 4 windows each flanked by stair towers of one window. Office
entrances at front of flanking towers with semicircular arched doorways; 5
mid C.20 shop fronts in between across the ground floor. The doorways are
each surmounted by a ceramic miniature howitzer, appropriate to the
building's name, with strip windows lighting stairs above. The 5 centre
bays have their metal framed casement groups recessed between tapered,
receding "streamlined" buttresses. Heavy projecting cornice on paired
brackets; set back attic. The whole is very little altered.
