Corner block of offices. 1876-77 by the Bradford practice of Lockwood and
Mawson for the Civil Service Supply Association, gutted 1984 with the facades
retained and restored. Hard red brick and terracotta, leaded attic. Typical
of the practice's Roman Renaissance manner in their Bradford warehouses.
3 storeys plus attic storey and basement to sloping Bedford Street side,
C.20 leaded dormered mansard. 10 windows to Bedford Street, one to
chamfered corner and 12 to Chandos Place front. Solid pedimented corner
entrance with incised ornament and secondary pedimented doorway along
Chandos Place. Ground floor windows are deeply recessed between boldly
channelled brick piers with enriched banding. The 1st and 2nd floor
windows are vertically linked by their terracotta dressings with
architraves and on 1st floor with archivolt heads to the sashes, framed by
pilasters and surmounted by pediments. The window bays to Bedford Street
and flanking the corner are articulated through 1st and 2nd floors by giant
Corinthian pilasters with fluted and banded shafts. Attic storey windows
have eared terracotta architraves. Deep garlanded entablature carries
round block over 2nd floor; attic cornice and blocking course.
