Town house 1742-44 by William Kent for Lady Isabella Finch. Brown brick. Three
storeys basement and later dormers. Three windows, symmetrical. Ground floor
rusticated stone quoins and boldly rusticated stone and to recessed entrance. Stone
architraves to piano nobile and second floor, those on first floor with pediments, the
central one on consoles, and with blind balustrades linked by flat band. Bracketed
stone cornice beneath dormers. Wrought iron railings and overthrow with link
extinguishers and lampholders. Magnificent interiors to both main floors in particular
baroque spatial handling of spectacular staircase. First floor bedroom and boudoir to
rear redecorated late C18 probably by Henry Holland. Restored/redecorated 1963 by
John Fowler, consulting architect Philip Jebb, who are responsible for the Gothick
corridor flanking garden and the garden pavilion. Part of best surviving terrace of
town houses in square and with interior of exceptional quality.
