Intact four-bay hall house dating to c1500, with floors and
dormers inserted in the C17; entrance hall, stair and sitting
room/master bedroom suite added by C. H. Townsend in 1893-94
for Charles Edward Masterman. Timber framing, brick, tile
hanging and rendering. Roofs of tile. Two storeys. Cross
passage and part of low end of hall house survives as the
present kitchen; two-bay hall to the west, with chamfered beam
and joists of a late C17 design. Parlour to the west very
likely service room with solar above. Three bedrooms above
were created out of the upper spaces of the original house;
arched braces and cranked and chamfered tie beam are the
clearest evidence of the open truss which would have dominated
the two bay hall. The third bay to the west was partitioned
off from the beginning. Inside the now ceiled off space are
extensively smoke blackened timbers, exept for those in the
west bay from the main hall. This end was half hipped; the
eastmost bay finished in a gable as it does now. The middle
bedroom retains a C17 dormer, now totally enclosed by the
Townsend additions. Main entrance with single-storey porch,
and canopy supported by curved metal braces; porch light and
plank studded door of an original design; entrance set in
two-span gabled projection; broad gable to 1890s wing at
extreme west; hipped range to left. Tile hung to upper floor
and rendered below. Gable end with outshut to left return,
rendered; C20 extension enclosing porch extension to kitchen
is specifically excluded. Brick on garden elevation, Flemish
bond. Jettied first floor to master bedroom wing; gable-facing
dormer to centre of hall range. Many windows of original
design remaining. West return of 1890s wing is brick in
Flemish bond, with late C20 window to sitting room.
Noteworthy interior features include: Tudor-arched brick
surround in entrance hall; long stair hall and passage, along
length of hall with landing at upper-floor level of hall
range, which is lower than 1890s addition; wood framed stair
with styled balusters and newels; much exposed framing in the
first floor.
Formerly known as Green Hill Farm, then renamed Greenlees
following Townsend's modification.
