21/886 The Old Hospital Block
and Raised Terrace and
Railings

Two houses, now flats. Built in 1718 as houses for Ordnance clerks. Flemish
bond brick; gabled old plain roof; brick ridge and end stacks.
Double-depth plan. 3 storeys with basement and attic; each house of symmetrical
6-window range. Carved brackets to flat hoods with panelled soffits above
segmental-arched 6-panelled (2 glazed) doors. Gauged red brick segmental arches
over mid/late C19 twelve-pane sashes to ground and second floors; similar semi-
circular arches over similar first-floor windows with radiating glazing bars.
Raised string courses beneath second-floor windows and stone-coped parapet.
Interior not inspected but likely to be of interest. Subsidiary features: raised
stone-coped brick terrace to front, including wrought-iron railings with urn
finials.
