(Formerly listed as East London Synagogue)
GV
II
Synagogue. 1876-77. Designed by H D Davis and E Emanuel. Brown brick with gabled roof. Exterior in simplified Byzantine/Romanesque style, with two storey, four bay main elevations. Upper tier of arched windows grouped in triplets and set within semi-circular relieving arches. Gabled cornice over recessed round-arched entrance has foliate capitals to columned jambs. Brick band to eaves.
Galleried interior with semi-circular arches set on very tall cast-iron piers. Polychrome brickwork to arches, walls and spandrels over arcade arches; polychrome tilework. Flat timber ceiling. Rose window above pedimented tabernacle of multi-coloured inlaid marble.
Of both architectural and historic interest as a particularly rich and unusual example of a Victorian synagogue, the structural richness of its interior contrasting with its plain exterior.
