Substantial house. Circa 1760-70, refronted early C19. Stucco. Slate roof.
Symmetrical. 3 storeys; 3 bay centre with 3 bay 2-storey wings, slightly
recessed. Centre bay slightly advanced with low crenellated gable. Central
projecting porch with corner buttresses and battlemented parapet cambered up over
depressed gable; pointed arched entrance.; dripmoulds, pinnacles. Square headed
windows of 1, 2 and 3 lights with dripmoulds. Plate glass. Crenellated parapet.
Ogee domed finials to octagonal corner buttresses flanking centre piece. Rear
facade retains C18 character. Interior: contains C18 staircase and some early
C19 painted glass. Etloe House was the home of William Bowyer (1699-1777) friend
of Dr Johnson and proprietor of The Gentleman's Magazine; also of Cardinal Wiseman.
