Former gatehouse to Halstead Hall, now barn. C16 with C19 and
C20 alterations. Red brick in English bond with some diaper work
in dark headers, pantile roof. 2 storey originally 4 bay front,
with inserted central C20 double doors probably into original
gateway opening. To left at low level a C20 louvred opening with
ventilator above. To first floor one C19 fixed light with
cambered brick head and to right a C20 fixed light with wooden
lintel. Below the eaves are 3 C16 windows with moulded brick
surrounds and 4 centred arched heads having square brick labels
above. A fourth similar opening has been enlarged in the C19 to
provide a granary access with planked door. The diaper work on
the left hand side of the building is extensive and well
preserved, beneath the eaves is a continuous pattern of lozenges.
At the rear is a large blocked arch with low 4 centred head and
double chamfered surround. To the left is a lower and narrower
more pointed pedestrian opening and 2 narrow pointed lights, one
altered C20. Above are 4 openings matching those on the front, 3
of these are blocked, one contains a fixed light window.
