5/82 Barn at Greatford
Hall
30.10.68 -
G.V. II*
Aisled barn. Early C16, altered C20. Coursed limestone rubble
with ashlar quoins to lower part of wall. Timber frame upper
part. Collyweston slate roof. Single storey with attic lights,
2 bay front. The side walls stand to 5'O" and have a chamfered
coping. Above approximately the same height of timber frame,
close studding on a sleeper beam arranged in 8 bays with
straight diagonal braces on the bay posts now infilled with
glass. Off-centre double planked doors with weatherboarded
gablette and to right a smaller planked door. In the roof are 2
gable dormers, 2 light plain casements and slate hung cheeks. On
the south side there are no openings, but at the centre is a C20
decorative concrete panel, one of many made by Major C.C.L.
Fitzwilliam, the rebuilder of the Hall in the 1930s. The
interior has 8 aisled bays comprising large jowled posts on stone
bases spaced approximately 12'O" apart, with straight braces to
the ties. The principals are numbered. The tie beams have queen
post struts. Lapped butt purlins. There is no firm evidence for
the original use of the barn, but from its size it seems likely
that it was for tithes.
