Archway to Australian Cemetery, Harefield
Entrance archway. Probably c.1921 by the Imperial War Graves Commission. Portland stone. A pylon-shaped arch set into the west side of the brick churchyard wall. Single arched opening with inset moulding and imposts, flanked by sunken inscription panels, inscribed 'HAREFIELD PARISH CHURCHYARD. AUSTRALIAN MILITARY CEMETERY'. Projecting base; plain iron gates. Upper part bears a shallow sunken cross with inscription 'THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE'. Above is a shallow pyramidal coping above a twice inset plinth.
HISTORY: erected to mark the resting place of numerous Australian soldiers who died of wounds while patients at the nearby Harefield Place hospital during the First World War. Designed in the characteristic style of the IWGC, and showing the influence of Lutyens in its design.
