Description

LANGFORD BUDVILLE CP
ST12SW
LANGFORD BUDVILLE VILLAGE
4/44
Langford Court
25.1.56
II*
Shown on OS map as Ritherdons. House. Late medieval, ceiled C16, extended west C17,
south-east addition with staircase dated 1722, probably when small north-east closet
also added, extended further west C19, minor alterations early C20.
Render grooved as ashlar on facade, exposed random rubble elsewhere, bitumen covered
slate roof, hipped C18 additions, large external stack east gable end, brick stack left
of cross passage, C18 brick second bay right and C19 first bay right. Plan complex,
smoke blackened roof trusses said to survive in roof space indicating open hall house
subsequently ceiled to 3-cell and cross passage with porch, kitchen end to right of
cross passage subsequently extended west, closet addition north-east corner and 2-storey
wing over cellars added with staircase north-west. One and a half storeys, a number of
C18 leaded wooden casements with fine comtemporary catches, mainly at rear, otherwise
C20, one gabled dormer left and 3 right of full height gabled porch with 2-light
casement, ground flow single storey projection with C18 casement on left return,
2 casements left of porch, one right, ribbed plank door and 2 casements beyond.
Segmental headed opening to porch with keystone and voussoirs, ribbed plank inner door.
Rear elevation: 5:2 bays and second and third bay left, small glazed opening to former
stair rising beside lower end stack, now corridor, original fenestration to projecting
C18 wing right, 2 storeys with attic over cellar. Interior partially seen; remains of
moulded beam to hall left of through passage with moulded cornice, inner room with C18
stair rising against extension, with small closet opening out in gable end, moulding cut
probably when a partition inserted and subsequently removed. This end possibly became
the dining room in the C18 and the closet was for serving since the kitchen was some
distance away. A beam above stairs leading to cellar has date April 1722 painted on it.
C18 panelled parlour, semi-circular headed niches flanking chimney piece with space for
overmantel painting since removed. Interesting example of C18 attempt to adopt a
traditional farmhouse plan to gracious living. (VA6 Report, unpublished SRO, undated).
