Small rectangular timber framed building set back from the road, formerly the
summerhouse to Nos 86 to 90 (even) and now attached to the Language Centre. Probably
late C19. 2 storeys with lantern rising on roof. Whitewashed walls with black
timberwork. Decorative tile roofs. Lantern has cresting and weathervane. Fixed
diamond leaded lights in wooden frame of lantern. Gablets over 1st floor windows
with facing tiles and paired casements containing panels of painted glass. Ground
floor modernised. Lean-to extension to right. On 1st floor inside is a wood lined
room with walls sloping up to the lantern above. In the heads of the 4 lights
facing west are 4 excellent roundels of painted glass depicting the heads and attributes
of the 4 seasons. This glass is probably by Sir E Burne-Jones. Graded on account
of the glass.
Nos 86 to 90 (even), the Summerhouse at Language Centre The Cottage and the Swiss
Cottage in Linden Grove form a group together with Weir House, Weir Lodge and
Gatepiers.
