The stables, curved walls and
piers to the stable yard, 20
metres North-west of Chilton
Cantelo House
GV II
Stables and stableyard to former manor house. Mid C19. Local stone cut
and squared, with Ham stone dressings; Welsh slate hipped roofs. Of 'L'
plan, mostly one storey, with 2-storey portion at end of South wing,
with a stone bell turret on the North-east angle between the wings.
Timber casement windows with voussoired and keystoned arches; tall
semi-circular arched doorways to 2-storey block, now filled in tiff
extension in concrete block with corrugated asbestos cement sheet roof
to South of West wing. Interiors, adapted for school use, not seen. The
clock turret has crude scoll pilasters on each face, flanking a clock
dial; above a semi-circular open arched bell turret with bell; lead
covered bell-hipped pyramidal roof with stone finial. The curved stone
walls to the stable yard approximately 2.5 metres high, with flat
copings and massive circular stone piers having heavy moulded caps. Not
only an important part of the Manor house estate, still virtually
complete, but visually important because of its relationship with St
James' Church (qv), to which it fords the West boundary to the
churchyard: the bell turret sakes an interesting contrast with the West
tower of the church.
