Two houses, now flats. Irregular L-plan, in 2 parts. Main block: mid-
to late C18 with late C20 alterations. Rendered brick with slate roof.
2 storeys. Moulded plinth and parapet with stone coping. Integral brick
end stack to left and external brick end stack to right. 7 bays; glazing
bar sashes (the lower leaves replaced by C20 casements) with painted stone
cills and rusticated stone lintels with raised keystones. Ground-floor
windows cut down and with only a small portion of the sash surviving at top.
C20 glazed door in second bay from left. Ground-floor lean-to verandah
with panelled wooden posts and eaves brackets. Wing at right angles to left.
Probably C17, remodelled in the early C19. Rendered timber frame (lined as
ashlar to rear). Slate roof to rear and C20 machine tiles to front. 2
framed bays. One storey and attic. North-west front: integral brick end
stacks and roughly central brick stack behind ridge. 2 gabled semi dormers,
that to left has boxed 16-pane glazing bar sash and that to right has 2-light
Gothick wooden casement with Y-tracery. Ground-floor group of 5 glazing
bar sashes (of 12 and 20 panes) with wooden cill, and divided by panelled
wooden mullions supporting continuous frieze and cornice. Entrance at rear.
Interior not inspected. The wing faces onto Saint Mary's Street. It was
formerly part of No. 20, Saint Mary's Street (q(v.) but is now part of The
Hermitage.
