17/23 Parterre, retaining wall and
steps approx. 30m. E of Manor
House

GV II

Parterre. c.1909-12 by Sir Edwin Lutyens. Retaining walls uncoursed limestone
and ironstone rubble with ironstone coping. Steps, paving and balustrade,
limestone ashlar. Wall with balustrade and flight of semi-circular steps at each
end descending from the lawn east of the Manor House to a paved parterre, with
flower beds set in geometrical patterns. Similar steps at north and south
approaches to the parterre. At the head of a sunken canal garden also designed
by Lutyens (q.v.).
