House. C15 origins; mainly late C16 and C17. Coursed limestone rubble; gabled
stone slate roof; C20 stone end and ridge stacks. 3-unit plan. 2 storeys;
3-window range. C20 timber lintels over C20 door and casements. Gabled bay in
rear wall; C20 rear extension. L-plan wing, probably late C16, attached to left
is of limestone rubble with artificial stone slate roof. Interior: bay to right
has stop-chamfered beams, and late C16 moulded four-centred arched fireplace on
first floor. To left are deeply-chamfered beams and lodging beams of late C16
inserted floor; chamfered joists in room to left of stack. Winder stairs from
first floor to attic which has late C16 collar-truss roof with heavy principals,
curved windbraces and former smoke bay. Wood bressumer over open fireplace to
inserted stack on left; collar-truss roof of 2 tiers with cambered upper collar.
Built as a plague house for Durham Abbey in the late C15; probably altered for
Leonard Perrott, who leased it from c.1550.
