3/21 White Hart Hotel

GV II*
C16 timber frame structure, refronted in 1725 as dated on rainwater heads, ground
floor remodelled and the whole refaced in the C20. Ashlar in local Baroque style
with a gabled slate roof and 3 stone stacks. Three storeys, 6 bays, the centre
2 bays recessed. Moulded cornice. Rusticated quoins to top floor sill level,
moulded and eared architraves with projecting keystones, brackets below and aprons
above top floor windows. Sash windows throughout without glazing bars. A 3-light
window replaces the central carriage arch and the inner window opening to the
left-hand bay has been lengthened for a doorway. Fine painted hotel sign between
the 2 central first floor windows. Inside, despite extensive remodelling, C16
features survive. The NW room on the first floor has a complete oak panelled
scheme with fluted frieze and some carved ornamental panels. This room also has
a wide stone fireplace with obtuse angled head, hollow spandrels and stop moulded
jambs. There are 2 similar fireplaces on the ground floor. To the rear a stone
tiled, rubble stone range with jettied upper storey now stuccoed, masking timber
framing. The White Hart is an impressive interpretation by local masons of a
Baroque style derived from Gibbs' Ditchley Park.
