12/138 Forecourt retaining
- wall adjoining
Pitchford Hall
to north-east
GV II
Forecourt retaining wall. 1870's and 1880's, probably by George Devey
(1820-86). Squared and thinly coursed red sandstone. Wide concave
curve, returned to the south; approximately 32 metres long and 3-4
metres high. 7 large buttresses with chamfered tops and square end
pier north. The wall retains the forecourt above the Row Brook to the
east and probably dates from the time of Devey's work at Pitchford Hall
when the main entrance was moved from the south to the north. Visually
important to the setting of the house. Included for group value.
