26.2.54. The Assembly Rooms

Former Assembly Rooms now galleries, restaurant, lecture rooms and flat.
Includes the cinema west of the west wing. 1754 by Thomas Ivory with C15
undercrofts and later fragments. C17 east wing. Red brick. Flint and
brick rubble. Rendered. Pantile roofs. 2 storeys. 5 bays with irregular
projecting wings. Principal facade:- central door with rusticated surround
and elliptical pediment on consoles. Sash windows with glazing bars and
moulded surrounds. Parapet with dentil cornice and pediment over projecting
centre bay. Hipped roof. Right-hand wing: 3 storeys. 5 bays. Cinema
entry to the left-side with projecting 2-storied open pediment and rusticated
ground floor. Door to right-side with moulded surround and pediment supported
on consoles. Sash windows with glazing bars in simple surrounds. Small
bracket cornice and roof with hip at north end. Stone quoin at north-east
corner and blocked frieze window in the north facade. Left-hand wing:-
C17. 2 storeys. 3 storeys adjoining principal facade. 6 irregularly spaced
first floor windows plus single 3 storey bay. Sash windows with glazing bars
and 4 scattered casement windows. Iterior:- central room with polygonal bay
and rooms to each side with panelling and plasterwork and gallery supported
on columns. Undercrofts:- Brick. 2 bays with diagonal ribs with subsidiary
ridge and cross ribs. Hollow chamfer on minor ribs. Wall arches and wall
piers. Very long pointed barrel vault to the north with blocked low side-
chamber on the east side with blocked opening above. The building stands on
the site of and incorporates small fragments off the College of St. Mary-in-
the-Fields. Scheduled as an Ancient Monument.
