Farmhouse. C17 to rear left, with early C18 wing and stair-turret to right and
mid C18 wing to left of front. Coursed and uncoursed limestone rubble; limestone
ashlar quoins and dressings to rear left; brick quoins and dressings to rest of
house; stone slate roof; brick stacks. L-plan. 2 storeys; 6-window range of left
gable wall, stair-turret to centre and further recessed 2-bay right wing.
Segmental arch over plank door to stair turret. Late C20 porch. Left wing has
segmental arches over late C19 three-light casements and C20 casement to front;
early C18 block to right has flat brick arches over late C19 and C20 two-light
casements, and C20 segmental arch over C20 window. Separate hipped roofs to
front blocks; gabled C17 rear left block; lateral stacks; large stack between
C17 and mid C18 blocks. Interior: C17 block has queen-post truss to right with
evidence of timber-framed partition below; C17 chamfered stone fireplace and
chamfered and stopped beam in heightened ground-floor room. Early C18 block has
winder stairs rising around open wall, with barley-sugar balusters on closed
string. Bolection-moulded door in bolection-moulded architrave leads to similar
panelled room with similar architrave to fireplace; pastoral scene painted on
overmantle panel, white and ochre marbling on fielded panels with Chinoiserie
scenes between. Hid C18 wing to front left has chamfered beams and king-post
roof. Subsidiary features: Attached to left is one-storey range of C18 brick
with stone slate roof; central C18 two-storey, 3-bay cartshed of C18 brick to
rear, C20 brick to front with half-hipped stone slate roof; one-storey range to
left of C18 brick, partly Flemish bond with flared headers, and gabled old tile
roof. Interior: Barn has C18 plank door to quarter turn stairs, and 3-bay
collar-truss roof. The panelled room with its marbled and Chinoiserie decoration
is a rare example of C18 interior decoration.
