5/107 Entrance gates and flanking
18/07/63 walls approx. 70m. SW of Manor
House
GV II*
Entrance gates and walls. Late C16/early, C17 and later. Coursed limestone rubble
and ashlar. Original entrance gates, now disused, are sited opposite original
front door, and have a semi-circular archway under a straight entablature with
ogee gable and 3 obelisk finials. The outer face of the arch has a moulded
chamfer set with nailhead ornament. The oak tympanum survives above a moulded
oak lintel, and is carved with rays and leaf ornament. To right is a small
4-centre arched doorway with recessed spandrels and label. The plank doors are
probably replacements. Flanking walls step down either side and return towards
original front of house; that on the right stopping short just beyond a 4-centre
arched doorway with recessed spandrels and label.
