Stenton House
GV II
House. Early C19. Brick and stucco with stone dressings and
hipped and gabled concrete tile roofs. Chamfered eaves with
wooden gutters on brackets, 2 side wall stacks. 2 storeys plus
attics with 2 storey wings. Symmetrical garden front has a
pedimented central feature with a French window and flanking
lights, and above it a renewed Venetian window. Above again,
an altered round headed window. On either side, a canted 2
storey bay window with 3 plain sashes on each floor, those
above being smaller. Asymmetrical street front has an
off-centre pedimented recessed entrance bay with a stucco
ground floor with plinth and cornice. Central 6-panel door
flanked by single plain sashes. Above, a central plain sash
and above again, a half-round window. Right wing, 4 windows,
has 3 small sashes and to right a larger sash, all with
glazing bars. Off-centre moulded stone doorcase with 6-panel
door and overlight, flanked to left by 2 plain sashes, and to
right by a larger glazing bar sash. Left wing has a large sash
to left and a small dummy window to right. 2 plain sashes
below. This building was formerly the home of the historian
Sir Frank Stenton.
