Country House 1785 by Newton of Newcastle, incorporating earlier fabric.
Remodelled and 2nd floor added 1856; further alterations 1969. Ashlar, rear
and north wing squared stone and rubble; slate roofs. Main block has 2 short
rear wings, single-storey C20 section between. Main south front 3 storeys,
5 bays, symmetrical; projecting 3-bay centre. Plinth and band broken by ground-
floor windows. Central tripartite French window in architrave with panelled
pilasters, modillion cornice and balustrade; re-set forward 1969 as front of
new porch. All windows sashes with glazing bars (some renewed), shorter on
2nd floor, in architraves; 1st and 2nd floor windows have cornices, the former
console bracketed, the latter with bracket sills. Modillion eaves cornice and
balustraded parapet. Hipped roof with stacks mostly rebuilt in yellow brick.
Similar fenestration on irregular returns, each with a canted bay. North right
wing of 3 storeys, 8 irregular bays. 1st short bay reputed to be a remnant of
the medieval Whitfield Tower. Old 15-pane sashes to ground floor of 2nd and 3rd
bays, other windows mostly renewed sashes; balustraded parapet. Rear elevation
of main block shows 20-pane sash window with geometrical glazing. Interior:
Geometrical stair with column-on-vase balusters and wreathed grip handrail.
Ballroom has egg-and-dart cornice and panelled plaster ceiling with floral
decoration. Dining Room has plaster frieze.
