3.8.61 Battle Abbey School

The mansion was built by the Webster family in 1857. Architect Henry Clutton.
But it incorporates part of the medieval buildings of the Abbey, ie the west
wall of the cloisters and parts of the frater and of the Abbot's lodgings. These
are C13-C14. Stone. They are visible at the east side of the building. On the
ground floor are nine pointed arches in early Perpendicular style with tracery
now filled in. These were the west wall of the cloisters. At the south end is
another medieval portion which is taller than the rest of the building. The
remainder dates from 1857. Three storeys and modern attic. Thirteen windows
and four dormers in all. Stone rubble, part of the upper storeys rendered.
Castellated parapet. Modern tiled roof. Casement windows. Two stepped gables
above the cloister arches. The west front dates largely from the C19.
