25-2-52 Gateway and walls to Priory
of St Pancras (formerly listed as
Archway adjoining No 12)

GV II

Gateway and walls. C13, now built into wall. Stone with flint and stone
walling and some red brick repairs. Z-plan piece of walling, extending
from point adjacent to north-east of Church of St. John Southover in three
stretches to the north-west corner of Priory Crescent. North-west stretch:
circa 10 feet high and 7 yards long with the remains of a dressed stone
arch on the north side at the eastern and western ends. A mask of grotesque
character has been inserted in the wall to the right fo the remains of the
arch. Central stretch: 5 yards long with buttressing wall to east.
Main gate: formerly the pedestrian entrance to the Priory. Pointed arched
gateway in short stretch of dressed stone wall to south-east.
Double-chamfered arch on double-ordered piers. Much eroded at time of
resurvey. Later C20 gateway of wrought-iron with dograils and decorative
cross-pieces. The gateway was moved and re-erected from its original
place to the west of the Church.
