Paper mill, founded 1788 by Captain William Smith; attached kennels later C19.
Rubble with tooled-and-margined quoins and dressings; Welsh slate roof. South
elevation 2 storeys, 3 bays, irregular. Left bay gabled. 3 boarded doors, 2
with timber lintels and the other in alternating-block surround; boarded loft
door under timber lintel. 2 kennels with railed exercise yards to left. Right
return shows broad arch for tail race with boarded window over and part-slatted
1st floor window. Left return boarded, where part of building has been demolished.
Interior; 1st floor fireplace with tooled lintel, arched set pot recess and
ornamental cast iron oven door.
Included for group value and historic interest; French assignats were forged
here in 1793 in an attempt to lower the value of French revolutionary currency.
