Group of 22 boundary stones. 1788 and earlier. Sandstone. c. 2 ft. high.
18 of the stones are inscribed on one side M for Middleton and on the other S
for Swinburne. 4 stones are inscribed TM for Thomas Middleton and JS for John
Swinburne; 3 of these stones are also dated 1788.
They form a complex line through the wood and represent a boundary dispute
vigorously pursued by Edward Swinburne till his death in 1786 and resolved by
his son John Swinburne in 1788.
A further 5 stones have been removed and are now at Swanstead near Belsay.
