Description

ACKLINGTON ACKLINGTON VILLAGE
NU 20 SW
(South side)
7/6 Outbuilding to
north of Old
Vicarage, with
attached yard walls
GV II

Outbuilding and yard walls, 1861, probably by James Deason. Snecked stone
with tooled ashlar dressings; graduated Lakeland slate roof. One storey, 5
narrow bays: 2 segmental arches holding boarded double doors, a stable door
in chamfered surround, a 6-pane casement and a stable door in an inserted
opening. Coped gables on moulded kneelers; small ridge stack with chamfered
cap. Left return shows buttress and slatted gable opening; right return shows
boarded pitching door in chamfered surround. Rear elevation to street shows
pair of blocked slit vents near left end.

South yard wall joins south-west corner of outbuilding with north-west corner
of Old Vicarage (q.v.), and holds central gateway flanked by low buttresses.
North wall joins north-east corner of outbuilding and runs east, stepping in
to enclose former midden, to gateway with buttress on left; coping steps up
to taller return linking to east end of Old Vicarage kitchen wing. Gabled
copings throughout.

Outbuilding contained coach-house, groom's room, cartshed, stable and cow
byre.

C20 outbuildings against north wall are not of interest.
