HAUXLEY HIGH HAUXLEY
NU 20 SE
8/137 Garden wall to
east of Hauxley
Hall, with attached
summerhouse
GV II
Garden wall and summerhouse. Wall late C18, summerhouse probably early C20
re-using old materials. Wall brick in irregular, largely stretcher bond, with
stone coping and roughly-coursed stone rear face. Summerhouse brick with roof
of red fish-scale tiles. 3.5-metre high wall runs north from north-east
corner of Hall (q.v.), with gap for C20 drive, then turns east alongside road;
flat stone coping replaced by cement in places, swept up at east end. Short
southward return 5 metres high with 3 external set backs.
Half-glazed summerhouse has open porch with banded piers carrying separate
swept hipped roof.
Historical note: This length of wall probably formed the back of the 'long
glass house' built by John Widdrington so that 'his delicate south-country
wife might take exercise without exposure to the east wind' (Northumberland
County History V p.308).
C20 greenhouse built against wall, and altered length of wall further to east,
are not of special interest.
