NU 2417 LONGHOUGHTON HOWICK HALL

16/124 Icehouse 50 metres
north-west of main
gates to Howick Hall

Icehouse. Late C18 or early C19, altered C20. Exterior squared tooled stone,
interior brick. Circular structure barely rising above ground level. 8 steps
down to square-headed doorway on north; window opening to south. Interior 3.6
metres diameter, with low domical vault and one blocked cupboard. Present
floor and window opening are later insertions; perhaps modified to serve as
an air-raid shelter.
