Gatehouse. cl841 probably by John Crake for Brudenell family of Deene Hall.
Limestone ashlar with lead and slate roofs. Central gatearch, with 4-centred
arch-head and decorated spandrels, has flanking octagonal castellated turrets,
with gargoyles at corners. Turrets are of 3 stages with arrow slits to alternate
laces of lower and upper stage. Moulded string course between stages.
Castellated parapet between turrets has a large central armonial plaque
surmounted by a weathervane. Lodge house attached to left of gatearch is
probably one unit plan with scullery. 2 storeys, one-window range. 4-light
canted bay window to ground floor has wood mullions, arch-head lights and a
castellated parapet. 2-light first floor window, also with arch-head lights, has
gable over. Moulded string course, between floors, and ashlar gable parapets.
Ashlar stack with octagonal flues, at end. Arch-head doorway, to right of
lodge-house, gives access to a porch which links to the gatearch. Parapet wall,
above, has a small pyramid roof behind. Plaque with linked initials aboveporch.
A second archway gives access to the side of the porch. Gatearch has pair of
wooden gates with arched openwork decoration. Low wall, attached to right of
gatearch, has tall octagonal piers and forms part of gatehouse layout with wall
approximately one metre east of Porters Lodge (q.v.). interior not inspected.
