HURSTPIERPOINT
North End Farm Barn
II
Barn. Mid to late C18 reusing some older upright posts and rafters. Timber framed barn of five bays with deep plinth of red brick and clad weatherboarding above with half hipped tiled roof. Central cart entrance. Interior has frame of good scantling with roof of curved queen struts and through purlins. The bay posts have jowls with cut profiles. Staggered midrail with curved tension braces. This barn has a possibly unique feature in that the bay west of the wagon bay is double the size of the other eastern bays and has an intermediate post instead of a bay post and no tie beam. To compensate for the increased stress the purlin is clasped by a collar instead of queen struts and curved horizontal braces, like dragon pieces, are secured by a bare face lap dovetail into the plate and tie.
