Farmhouse. Early C16 with late C17 internal remodelling and later
alterations. Red brick replacing earlier timber frame;plain tile roof;
brick external lateral stacks. 2-bay former open hall range, now
floored, aligned east-west facing north, and flanking 2-bay crosswings
aligned north-south projecting north, roughly central rear wing aligned
north-south. 2 storey hall range with toothed eaves flanked by gabled
crosswings of 2 storeys and attic; 1:2:1 bays, casements, those to the
ground floor and to the first floor of the wings have segmental heads;
central 6-panelled door with bracketed hood. Interior: Hall range:
Late C17 L-shaped staircase with turned balusters immediately east of
the front door; late C17 first floor partition walls of oak panelling
with an upper balustrade and carved frieze; massive central arch braced
roof truss with cambered and chamfered tie beam; the roof trusses at
each end of the hall range have three vertical struts between tie beam
and collar, curved wind braces throughout the building. East wing:
Timber framed east-west partition of square panels, the southern
ground floor room has chamfered and stopped spine beam and joists
and evidence for a former staircase, fireplace in north-east corner,
the northern ground floor room has chamfered and stopped spine beam;
and a fireplace in the south-east corner; the southern first floor room
has C17 wall panelling and a blocked doorway with a cambered head in
the north wall which formerly led to the northern room now entered at
first floor level via a Cl7 panelled door. West wing: The walls of
the northern ground floor room are fully covered in oak panelling complete
with a door in the south west corner which formerly led to the southern
room, and a cupboard in the south-east corner; at first floor level
there is a blocked doorway with cambered head which formerly linked
the northern and southern rooms.
