9/24
- No. 85 (Essington House)
GV II

House. C17 in origin, largely rebuilt in the C18 and altered in the
mid-C19. Red brick almost totally replacing the earlier timber
framing; plain tile roof; brick ridge stacks. Formerly a 3-bay
timber framed range aligned east-west facing south, extended by a single
bay to the west in the C18 at the same time as the outer walls were re-
built in brick. 2 storeys; 3 windows, the left hand bay is blank,
corner pilaster strips, casements with segmental heads; central half-
glazed door with bracketed hood, a vertical joint at the level of the
first floor window sills indicates that the eaves level has been raised
since the initial rebuilding in brick. Interior: timber-framed
transverse walls including the former western end wall, one corner post,
large open fireplace, chamfered and stopped ceiling beams.
